Pillar 1 of 5

Customer Value

Does the product create meaningful, repeatable value for a clearly identifiable group of customers?

Assess whether a clearly identifiable group of customers experiences meaningful product value, reaches that value reliably, adopts the product in ongoing use, and continues to receive value that can strengthen over time.

This pillar forms part of the deeper product assessment, where the strongest evidence for current value and future growth is established.

This is one of five connected pillars used to assess a digital product’s readiness for buyer scrutiny.

How this pillar is examined

1.1

Customer Problem

Assess whether there is a clearly identifiable type of customer with a meaningful problem, and whether those customers consistently recognise and describe the value the product provides.

Strong market fit depends on more than having customers. The product should solve a sufficiently consistent problem for a recognisable group, with customers able to articulate why the product matters and why they choose it over relevant alternatives.

1.2

Activation

Assess whether target customers can reach meaningful first value reliably and within an appropriate amount of time and effort.

A product can have a compelling value proposition but still fail if customers struggle to experience it. Reliable activation and appropriate time-to-value show that the promised value is accessible in practice.

1.3

Ongoing Usage

Assess whether customers adopt the product capabilities that create value and incorporate them into their expected workflows or behaviours.

Initial value is not sufficient on its own. Ongoing adoption provides evidence that the product is useful in real customer behaviour and that its value extends beyond onboarding or initial experimentation.

1.4

Compounding Value

Assess whether customer value persists or increases over time, supporting continued use and creating legitimate product-level reasons for customers to remain rather than switch.

Durable market fit is demonstrated when customers continue to receive value and, ideally, the product becomes more valuable or more embedded with continued use through factors such as accumulated data, workflows, integrations, collaboration, learning or operational dependence.
